Family Sports Day
A Waihi Beach tradition - the annual Family Sports Day is once again to be held on new years day. Organised by the Waihi Beach Surf Club, this is certainly a 'must do' event.
Located 20 kilometres to the south of Waihi Beach, Katikati is known as New Zealand’s ‘mural town’ due to the decorative paintings that adorn the sides of town buildings, depicting scenes from the area’s rich history.
Katikati is a popular ‘lifestyle’ town with many small-block farms and orchards, some of which offer fresh produce for sale at roadside stalls. It pays visitors to keep an eye out for these as the produce is always fresh and reasonably priced.
Visitors might like to take a walk along the Haiku Pathway, which follows the Uretara stream and is decorated with boulders inscribed with Haiku poetry. The pathway is 2 kilometres long and features many open spaces, clusters of boulders and a beautiful bridge.
Martha Gold Mine Tours
Dating back to the 1800s when Waihi was a gold mining boomtown, Martha mine is still operating today, yielding more than a million dollars worth of gold and silver a week, although the open-pit mine that exists today is very different from the maze of underground shafts that operated in the early days.
Tours are available from Monday to Friday and bookings are essential. Contact:

Goldfields Train Ride
This scenic heritage railway runs between Waihi and Waikino, carrying its passengers through historic gold mining countryside. Operating on either steam or diesel, it winds through rugged forest areas where original remnants of 19th century gold mining can still be seen today. The train stops at the delightful Waikino Café and there are extra rides on holidays and weekends.

The coastal walk from the north of Waihi Beach to Orokawa Bay is a 90-minute round trip and well worth the effort. Orokawa Bay is a scenic reserve with 145 hectares of native bush containing native kauri and puriri trees. At the halfway point, walkers arrive at picturesque and secluded Orokawa beach, perfect for relaxing, fishing or for picnicking beneath the over-hanging Pohutukawa trees. William Wright Falls is roughly 1.5 kilometres inland from Orokawa Bay and spills over a 28-metre sheer rock face.
Homunga, situated 90 minutes farther north along the coast, is another beautiful bay known for its dense Pohutukawa forest. It can be reached via track from the northern end of Orokawa Bay. This track is not as well developed as the one from Waihi Beach to Orokawa Bay but provides spectacular views and interesting terrain.
Beautiful Karangahake Gorge has an historic walkway which is approximately 4.5 kilometres in length and suitable for both pushchairs and bicycles. It takes between 90 minutes and two hours to complete depending on your level of fitness, or there is a shorter track that takes about one hour.
The walkway follows the Ohinemuri River to the Owharoa Falls and then continues to the Victoria battery site at Waikino with a picturesque picnic and swimming spot along the way. Visitors follow a railway dating from the 1900s on a walk that includes a one kilometre-long brick tunnel, railway and swing bridges, many old mining relics and, of course, spectacular scenery.
During the summer holiday period Waihi Surf Club patrols the beach using a system of flags between which swimmers should keep. Orokawa Bay is only a 45-minute walk along the coast from Waihi Beach and is a great spot for experienced surfers.
Waihi Beach Surf Club organises competitions and events throughout the year and, when surfing conditions are good, you can watch from the beach as boarders challenge the waves.

Fishing
Waihi Beach and the surrounding area offer numerous fishing and boating activities. You can cast for snapper off either the beach or rocks, or you can launch your boat at the north end of Waihi Beach and fish the well-stocked bays and rocky headlands along the coast.
Other activities include bottom fishing, light game fishing, diving, pleasure boating and trips out to Mayor Island.
Bowentown Heads offer good fishing for shore-based anglers and the Bowentown Boating Club Wharf is a great place for first-time fishermen to try their hand.
