Dating back to the 1800s when Waihi was a gold mining boomtown, Martha mine is still operating today, yielding more than a million dollars worth of gold and silver a week, although the open-pit mine that exists today is very different from the maze of underground shafts that operated in the early days.

Waihi Beach TOP 10 rents mountain bikes (including helmets and locks) and are able to recommend suitable rides depending on your fitness level and available time. The ride from Waihi Beach Top 10 Holiday Park to Bowentown Heads is reasonably flat and about 11 kilometres long. Waihi Township is around 10 kilometres away, from where you can take your bike on the scenic heritage railway to Karangahake Gorge and ride the many walking tracks found there.
