The seaside town of Timaru is the regional centre of South Canterbury and overlooks Caroline Bay on State Highway 1, midway between Christchurch and Dunedin, on the East Coast of New Zealand's South Island.
The golf course is next door. The Caroline Bay coastal pathway as well as the rose gardens are just a few minutes away. Further afield there is every sort of outdoor activity from tramping to bushwalks to fishing the many rivers in season.
There are many garden attractions including the Timaru Botanic Garden and Trevor Griffiths Rose garden (over 1200 varieties). The South Canterbury district is also home to a number of heritage trails such as the Pioneer Trail and the Bullock Wagon Trail.
