Seal Colony TOP 10 Holiday Park is on the northern West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand. Our park is at Carter’s Beach, just a few minutes from Westport township.
Westport is 1.45 hours drive north of Greymouth, approximately 4.5 hours drive from Christchurch over the Southern Alps via Lewis Pass, or 3 hours drive south from Nelson via Murchison and the Buller Gorge.
The West Coast is a stunningly scenic part of the South Island, renowned for its dramatic beaches, lush native rainforests and mountain backdrop. North of Westport the native forest is sprinkled with Nikau Palms and other semi-tropical foliage, reflecting the milder, warmer climate in this part of the country.
Westport is located just south of the tip of the North Island, so benefits from its northerly aspect, and is just a few hour’s drive from the tip of the main coastal highway (67) which ends at Karamea and the beginning of the Heaphy Track.
Visitors are drawn to Westport and the West Coast to explore the wild West Coast beaches, enjoying walks to spectacular scenery like the Oparara Arch and exploring sites that reflect the Coast’s mineral rich history as a gold mining and coal mining centre of the South Island.
On the way to Westport don't forget to allow time to visit the famous Pancake Rocks and Blowholes. Punakaiki is best known for its Pancake Rocks and Blowholes - both of which are spectacular and a must-see when visiting the West Coast.
The more adventurous can also go caving, surfing, jetboating, kayaking and rafting, making the most of the rivers and the sheer beauty of the region.
While you are staying with us at Seal Colony TOP 10 Holiday Park, you must visit the fur seal colony at Tauranga Bay, Cape Foulwind, which is a breeding colony and is easily reached by a 10 minute walk from the car park at Tauranga Bay. To enjoy a longer walk along the coast, you can take the 1.5 hour track from Cape Foulwind which gives great views of the dramatic coastline and the cape. Explorer Abel Tasman was the first European to sight the cape in 1642 but it was named Foulwind by Captain Cook.
Explore the Denniston and Millerton walkways where you can see remnants of the original mines at Denniston, which sits 600 metres above sea level including the Denniston Incline, and the nearby Millerton incline. The village of Millerton also has bush walks to remnants of the original miners bath house, access to parts of the track, waterfalls and stunning coastal views.
If your time is limited or you don’t like heights, Westport’s Coaltown Museum will provide your personal insight into what drove development of the Buller/Westport region, including a true to life coal mine, movies and hands-on exhibits showing the history of the area.
