The Cream Trip

This cruise follows the path of the original 1927 'Cream Trip'. Cruise past secluded islands of the Bay, delivering essential supplies and mail to island residents. See dolphins in their natural environment or swim alongside these inquisitive creatures. Go through the 'Hole in the Rock' (conditions permitting). Visit the Black Rocks, Marsden Cross and enjoy lunch during an island stopover at Otehei Bay.

Dolphin Eco Experience

Fast Boat Trip

If you are an Adrenalin junkie, then these boats are for you.

Feel the adrenalin as you race through the islands of the Bay & out to the open sea. Breathtaking scenery is enhanced with the skipper's commentary. Hold your breath as the skipper navigates through the narrow opening of the 'Hole in The Rock' (conditions permitting).  Adrenalin junkies will love the "EXTREME SEATS" at the front of the boat.  CAUTION: This is not for the faint hearted.

R Tucker Thompson

Day Sail - Come sailing on Northland's iconic tall ship the R Tucker Thompson and experience the Bay of Islands.  Take the opportunity to set the sails, ride the bowsprit and climb the rigging or simply relax while the crew command this impressive ship. Step ashore on a secluded island or take a swim while your crew prepares a delicious BBQ lunch.

If a Day Sail is not suitable there is a Late Afternoon two hour Cruise available Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.

Getting There

Some GPS’s don’t recognise the car ferry at Opua as the direct route to Russell and may direct you via the longer (although very scenic) coastal road instead. So make sure your GPS has the latest software programme but if you are unsure and don’t want to take the coast road then set your GPS for Beechy St, Opua, which is where you catch the car ferry. The ferry takes campervans, trucks and cars and the crossing takes approximately 10 minutes. The last ferry departs from Opua at 10pm.

The most direct route is to take State Highway 1 from Auckland to Cape Reinga. About 45 minutes north of Whangarei at Kawakawa take SH11 to Opua, Paihia and Russell (via vehicle ferry). Although the road is windy, it is fully sealed and well signposted. At the top of the hill leading to Opua, turn right and head down to the vehicle ferry which operates a continuous service during the day and a reduced service at night. Bookings are not required and you pay cash on board.

On the other side (called Okiato) keep following the main road for approximately 7km to Russell. The road is fully sealed. Drive straight through the village along York Street. Turn right onto Long Beach Road, then left into James Street. Russell Top 10 is on the corner of Long Beach Road and James Street.

For a more scenic journey, take the Old Russell road, which turns right off SH1 at Whakapara, approximately 20 minutes north of Whangarei. Following signs for Oakura, take your time and enjoy the fully sealed road as it meanders around the coast. There are plenty of beautiful beaches and places to stop for a leisurely break. Although very scenic the road is quite windy.
