Location
Port Waikato TOP 10 Holiday Park is situated on the West Coast 1 hour South West of Auckland City and Auckland International Airport, 30 minutes from SH 1 at Pokeno.
Port Waikato is where the mighty “Waikato River" NZ’s longest River, ends its journey and flows into the “Tasman Sea" 341 kms from Huka falls, Lake Taupo through 7 hydro lakes then Hamilton and on to Port Waikato. It has large expansive sand dunes which run along the rivers edge through to Sunset beach which is our local surf beach.
Attractions
Excellent Surfing, great swimming at surf beach (patrolled by local surf club during summer) and the river estuary (Maraetai Bay). Popular fishing spots along rivers edge and also surf beach, excellent rock fishing for the more experienced angler. Two boat ramps are located nearby and a local wharf suitable for kids sprat fishing. Fish cleaning, boat and trailer area is available within the park. Explore the rocky coastline at low tide, large rock pools to swim and hike to the top of the hills for amazing views of the coast and river mouth, seal colony and maui dolphins.
Also Port Waikato is known for its whitebait fishery. White bait nets can be hired from the Holiday Park during season – 15th August to 30th November each year.
The Cobourne Gardens are a must see. Playground and tennis courts new Café and Takeaways and local home crafts to visit.
Stop on way at Pokeno for the country’s largest ice creams and famous Pokeno Bacon.
Golf at Pukekohe or Onewhero. Pukekohe for shopping, tenpin bowling, car and horse racing and local sports events. Tuakau country village and Franklin Zoo is 20 mins from Port Waikato .
The Local Annual Bush carnival happens 2nd January. Fishing Club organizes take a kid fishing Auckland anniversary weekend and Kahawai Fishing Classic Easter each year.
Major surf competitions are held each year.
Activities
Hire our fishing rods, flounder spearing gear or whitebait nets. Kayaks for hire and can be used safely in the estuary which is only 3 minutes walk from the park. Fun bikes are available for hire and are extremely popular with children and adults. Within the park there is a jumping pillow on which children love to spend a lot of time. A separate playground area is available for small children and parents can sit nearby and watch the children at play. A large grass area is available for ball activities and BBQ area.
