Holdens Bay is on the shores of Lake Rotorua, in the North Island of New Zealand. Only a 6km drive to the centre of Rotorua, and a 5 min walk away from the clear blue water of Holdens Bay. An ideal location to explore Rotorua's famous natural, cultural and adventure attractions.
Rotorua is well known around the world for its cultural heritage and often spectacular geothermal activity – including geysers and bubbling mud pools. It has historically been one of the most popular places in New Zealand for tourists to visit and experience some of the indigenous Maori culture firsthand, from 120 years ago when travellers came from around the world to visit the Pink and White Terraces and bathe in the mineral rich waters.
Whether seeking to experience Maori culture, geothermal earth forces, spa rejuvenation, thrills and adventure, or any of the other natural assets like 16 lakes, some of the world's best mountain biking trails, fantastic trout fishing and a myriad of forest walking tracks - Rotorua has something for everyone.
When you stay at Holdens Bay TOP 10 why not visit the popular Tamaki Maori village, a detailed replica of a pre-european Maori village set deep within the forest. You will receive a traditional welcome, experience real cultural ceremonies, hear legends and stories, enjoy traditional Maori song and dance and feast on a hangi (traditional maori meal, cooked in an earth oven). We can arrange for you to be picked up at the Park and dropped off off after a wonderful three-and-a-half hour evening experience.
Alternatively you could visit the Te Puia complex which also offers a multitude of Maori experiences. See the massive Pohutu geyser erupt up to 30 metres into the air, marvel at the Ngamokaiakoko mudpool as it bubbles at around 95 degrees Celsius, walk through a recreated Maori village and view New Zealand’s national bird, the endangered Kiwi. Observe the traditional art of weaving in the Te Rito weaving house, be entranced by a fully-carved meeting house (one of the few in New Zealand open to everyone) and see master carvers at work at the Te Puia carving school.
Activities
If you want something a bit more adventurous take a journey across Lake Rotorua to Mokoia Island – a sacred island to the Te Arawa people. Here you are formally welcomed by the tribe and entertained with traditional song and dance as you feast on an indigenous-style dinner.
If you're a true adrenalin junkie NZONE is perfect for you. Embrace the fear and do it anyway – a tandem or completely solo Skydive from 9,000, 12,000 or 15,000 feet in the air. NZONE offers you the ultimate leap of faith, a life-changing experience.
