Location
As the largest city in the South Island, Christchurch is the perfect place to start or finish your holiday in New Zealand, landing or departing from our modern international airport. Christchurch is ideally located as a base for exploring much of the South Island – with a central location that enables visitors to enjoy the beaches and the Alps in a day, and to travel from the East Coast to the West in less than a day.

Christchurch and Canterbury is a region with a huge diversity of activities, top class facilities, stunning scenery and year round events, sure to appeal to everyone from family groups, to sports teams, couples of all ages and backpackers.
The city has many options for those who enjoy clubbing, theatre, dining out, socialising in bars and cafes of the popular Strip and SOL square, plus the character-filled streets of Lyttelton, Akaroa and Sumner.
For those who enjoy the outdoors, taking to the hills on foot or bike is a popular option, along with the range of water sports, fishing, swimming, golfing, punting the Avon River and in the winter, the ski fields of Methven and Porters Pass are within an easy drive.
Canterbury is a generous host to those who enjoy food and wine, including the choice of wineries in Waipara, Banks Peninsula and Selwyn, and the wide range of cafes and restaurants offering cuisine from around the world in the central city and further afield.

The region has so many attractions, we can only name some of the selection - the Ko Tane Maori Cultural Experience at Willowbank Wildlife Park is a great family destination, while Ferrymead Historic Park and Canterbury Museum give an insight into local history. The International Antarctic Centre celebrates Christchurch’s connections with the Ice, plus provides a chance to see penguins close up and experience Antarctic temperatures, while the Arts Centre is always worth a visit for the weekend markets and resident craftspeople. Christchurch Casino provides fine dining and entertainment year round, and the Christchurch City Art Gallery offers some of Canterbury’s best artworks along with travelling exhibitions from around the world.
The Christchurch Gondola gives you a great view of the Canterbury Plains, Pegasus Bay and Lyttelton Harbour, and if you want to take the plunge, Swimming with Dolphins on Akaroa Harbour is a once in a lifetime experience. If sport is more your thing, you can relax watching rugby and cricket (and the occasional rock band) at AMI stadium (venue for the 2011 Rugby World Cup), take the family to QEII Leisure Centre, or enjoy a few rounds at the peaceful Clearwater Golf Course.
