The Royal Albatross Centre is located at Taiaroa Head on the tip of the Otago Peninsula, Dunedin. Owned and operated by the Otago Peninsula Trust, a charitable trust, whose purpose and objective is the protection and enhancement of the Otago Peninsula. Taiaroa Head itself, a nature reserve is managed by the Department of Conservation.
As well as being the only mainland place in the world to view Northern Royal Albatrosse in their natural habitat, Taiaroa Head has a strong historical connection. From Maori settlement in the 1300's to the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi: the establishment of the lighthouse and fortifications in the late 1800's, and its use as a defence base during World War I and II, New Zealand's culture and history is uniquely celebrated here alongside wildlife.
No tour would be complete without sampling the fine product. Welcome to our brewery bar where you can pour your own and you will enjoy an appreciation session of six Speight’s beers.
Visit the Speight’s Brewery shop, which is open to the public, where you will find genuine Speight’s beer gear for sale so you too can become part of the Southern Man legend.
After the tour pop down to the Speight's Ale House, situated within the Brewery, where you will find generous helpings of great Southern Fare. And all of the Speight's range is available fresh from the tap.
The Taieri Gorge Limited train is Dunedin's prestige tourist train operating from the historic Railway Station
The penguin tour begins with a short talk outlining the issues Yellow Eyed Penguins are facing, their lifecycle and how the Penguin Place conservation project is carried out. A short bus trip over the farm takes small groups to the reserve. While in the reserve, your guide will lead you on foot through a unique system of covered trenches and into viewing hides. These hides allow access to the living areas and breeding grounds of this shy penguin, providing the opportunity to witness and photograph undisturbed activity at close range.
Participants need to be comfortable on their feet as it is a walking tour. Over the hour, a maximum of 900 metres will be covered.
Is it a bird? Is it a plane? ...Well, it's definitely not a plane, but you will definitely see Albatross and many different kinds of wildlife on a Monarch Wildlife Cruise! Be spellbound by the spectacle of a feeding frenzy involving sea birds & marine mammals; be lucky enough to see pods of dolphins playing around the boat. Or venture out for a Half Day Tour or a Full Day Package.
We are perfectly-equipped to host the young and young at heart. As three-time New Zealand Tourism Award winners we'll give you all the benefits of having a friendly, experienced and knowledgeable crew guiding you along the way. And you'll get to see how the watery half live, hear a story or three about times gone past, and leave those landlubbers behind.
